In 1908 the Olympic games were first held in London, England. This Summer Olympics was the fifth Olympic Games and the third to be hosted outside of Athens, Greece. This Olympics was originally scheduled to be held in Rome, but re-located on financial grounds following a disastrous eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 1906. In this Olympics the British team was topped in the medal tally, finishing with three times as many medals as the second-place United States.
